Details

This project aims to provide Enviro Integration Strategies Inc. with comprehensive market intelligence regarding geotechnical infrastructure failures in the mining industry over the past 5 to 10 years. The project will focus on identifying and analyzing incidents where mining companies were responsible for infrastructure failures, detailing the material impacts on the companies, the environment, and the affected communities. Additionally, the project will compile a list of major mining companies, categorized by market capitalization, headquarters location, commodities, and the status of their operations, including active, closed, and those under care and maintenance. By synthesizing this information, the project seeks to offer insights into the patterns and consequences of infrastructure failures, as well as the current landscape of major players in the mining industry.

Deliverables

The deliverables for this project include a detailed report that outlines:

  1. A list of global companies that had geotechnical structure failures (tailings and/or water dams, waste rock, and heap leach facilities) in the last 5 to 10 years, grouping the list of failures and assets by geographical areas.
  2. The list of Canadian companies and assets that are under provincial or federal receivership due to violation of environmental permits, environmental failures, spills, geotechnical structure failures (dams, tailings, heap leach).
  3. The significant impacts that each failure had on the company that operated/owned those structures, as well as the impacts to the communities dowstream. For example:
  • shut down for X period of time,
  • drop in share price,
  • fines,
  • possible criminal charges,
  • legal claim(s) that were brought forward against the company and/ or the management team,
  • environmental cleanup cost

Additionally, a comprehensive database of the largest 200 major mining companies will be developed and provided, categorized by:

  • market capitalization groupings,
  • type of operations (open pit or underground),
  • headquarters location
  • commodities they produce
  • number of operating sites, closed and under care and maintenance, and
  • if readily available, number of tailings facilities they own & operate

Based on the list generated, and time permitting, Enviro will provide a subset target list to find out the contact information for respective managers accountable for tailings and environmental monitoring.

This information will be presented in a clear and concise manner, suitable for strategic decision-making.

EIS is sparking a mine waste revolution, focused on facilitating rapid change to reduce waste management risks, and to increase the resilience of responsible mining organizations. EIS can help mining companies to:

• Understand and evaluate the relative risks of their waste portfolio, to support decision-making and prioritization of effort and spend on improvements,
• Engage internal teams, by breaking down silos and facilitating collaboration,
• Assess the potential for value-add products within current or future “wastes”, as well as facilitate potential partnerships to reduce waste volumes,
• Discover system-based improvement opportunities, and avoid major lifecycle development and operational risks, associated with potential impacts, and
• Ease the change adoption cycle for more responsible operations.
