Overview

Community Engaged Learning at MacEwan University is a project-based, teaching-learning strategy that connects classroom theory to challenges experienced in the “real world” by our community partners (CPs).

Partnership Opportunity: no-fee help with building a plan to address United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for your business or organization. Want to be more sustainable but don’t know where to start? Students from our School of Continuing Education will map out a concept and build a project plan or proposal.

To learn more about the UN SDGs, please check out the short video An Introduction to the UN SDGs (1:57)

How this works

The instructor and Community Partnership Developer will select projects in early Dec. They will confirm with the selected CPs by the end of Dec. In Jan, you will virtually meet with your student team to brief them and answer questions.

Projects are tied to a student’s overall course mark and must be completed within a 2-month period.

What you get

  • A systems map. Think of a systems map as a type of detailed concept map that can be used to analyze how your organization can contribute to success within a broader framework of sustainability.
  • A project or proposal for your organization to implement to contribute to at least one SDG. Please note, that while general budgets will be considered and documented where possible, the course does not equip students to develop detailed budget plans.
  • Bonus: In addition to the above pieces, students may also develop a presentation (format to be determined) highlighting key parts of the proposal or plan and how it will support your organization in contributing to the SDGs

Timelines

· In early December 2021, the professor short lists applicable projects that will meet course learning goals.

· In early January 2022, student teams select a project and partners are informed of a match.

· Teams and partners meet (virtually) as needed to build and understanding of the issue, refine project goals, and create action plans.

· Teams present final project to partners in early April.
